14 June 2018
A diverse program of events and activities to support the experience and contribution of refugees is about to come to life across metropolitan and regional Victoria.
Refugee Week will take place nationally from 17 to 23 June 2018, coinciding with World Refugee Day on 20 June 2018. Coordinated by the Refugee Council of Australia, this year’s theme, #WithRefugees, calls on the Australian community to show its support for protecting the safety and rights of refugees.
Festivities in Victoria will begin with an official launch at Federation Square on Saturday 17 June 2018, bringing together diverse speakers and participants to share perspectives, challenge ideas and stimulate new thinking around Australia’s refugee policy.
The annual Refugee Film Festival, presented by the Refugee Council of Australia, Dendy Cinemas and Cinema Nova, will feature an incredible line-up of films from around the world exploring themes of resistance and resilience, and bringing to life the journeys that refugees often face in the search for asylum.
A range of opportunities to support the week’s activities will also be on offer in regional Victoria. Comedian Tom Ballard will host the launch of Refugee Art in Ballarat to exhibit paintings by refugee artists in detention, while a debate between two Bendigo secondary schools at the historic Bendigo Magistrates Court will see young Victorians tackle social justice issues for refugees and people seeking asylum.
Refugee Week is Australia’s peak annual activity to raise awareness about the issues affecting refugees, and celebrates the significant contributions that refugees make to Australian society.back to listing >
