The Southern Metropolitan Region (SMR) covers the area from South Melbourne down to the Mornington Peninsula and east to Melbourne’s growth corridors of Casey and Cardinia.
The SMR comprises 10 local government areas of Melbourne’s south-eastern suburbs with a population of approximately 1.2 million people, representing about one-quarter of the state’s total population.
The region’s communities are numerous and diverse, including rapidly changing inner urban communities and outer suburbs with significant growth.
The SMR covers an area of approximately 2886 square kilometres.
The Southern Metropolitan Region contains 10 municipalities:

Diversity in the Region
Established ethnic communities reside in most parts of the region but particularly in Kingston and Greater Dandenong with the main counties of birth being India, Vietnam, China, Greece and Vitnam. New and emerging communities in the region mainly comprise people from Middle Eastern, Asian and African countries.
