Refugee Support Package
The Victorian Government recently committed $4.7 million to a Refugee Support Package to be implemented by the Department for Victorian Communities, through the Victorian Multicultural Commission partnership with the Department of Human Services.
The package will:
- provide support to Victoria’s recently arrived refugees and humanitarian entrants by removing barriers to opportunities and providing assistance so they can better access existing services
- empower refugees to increase their participation in the community
- provide better coordination of service delivery to refugee and humanitarian entrants
Under the initiative, four full-time early intervention refugee service broker workers will be engaged in areas with high needs in metropolitan Melbourne. Two part-time positions will be located in regional Victoria.
Based in local communities, these workers will coordinate across Commonwealth and state government departments, local councils and community-based organisations to develop culturally appropriate services to improve outcomes for refugee and humanitarian entrants and to link services at the local level.
In addition, refugee health nurses will be based in community health centres in the south east region of Melbourne, central metropolitan Melbourne, in the north west of Melbourne and in two regional locations.
