Interpreter scholarships

The Victorian Multicultural Commission offers scholarships to students enrolled in the RMIT Diploma of Interpreting in emerging languages.

In 2008, scholarships are being offered to speakers of the following languages: Burmese, Dinka, Karen, Somali, Swahili and Tigrinya

Scholarship recipients receive $1,200 as a contribution to the cost of course fees, study materials, and other incidental expenses such as transport or babysitting costs. NAATI paraprofessional accreditation costs will also be covered for students who pass the Diploma.

A total of 121 scholarships have been provided to study the Diploma of Interpreting and the Advanced Diploma of Interpreting and Translating at RMIT University. To date, scholarships have been awarded for interpreting courses in nine languages, including Amharic, Arabic (Sudanese), Dari, Dinka, Farsi, Khmer, Nuer, Oromo Tigrinya, Somali and Timorese Hakka.

Who can apply?


Candidates must have high proficiency in English and one of the offered languages, pass the RMIT course entry requirements, have excellent communication and interpersonal skills and a commitment to work in the interpreting industry, and be either a citizen or a permanent resident of Australia, or the holder of a Temporary Protection Visa.

2. Download and complete a VMC 2008 Interpreter Scholarship Application Form (PDF 240 kb). Send this form to the VMC at the following address:

    The RMIT courses are approved by the new window icon National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters. Students who successfully complete the course to the required level receive accreditation as either paraprofessional or professional interpreters depending on the level of the course.
