New Commissioners announced

25 August 2011

New Commissioners have been appointed to the Victorian Multicultural Commission (VMC).

The 12 appointments include two re-appointees and a new Chairperson, Mr Chin Tan, and were carefully considered by the Victorian Government following an extensive recruitment and selection panel process.

The Multicultural Victoria Act 2011 (MVA), which will come into operation on 1 September 2011, provides that the Commission consists of a Chairperson, Deputy Chairperson, a Youth Commissioner, a representative of a community organisation and eight other members.

The changes were announced on 25 August by The Minister for Multicultural Affairs and Citizenship, Nicholas Kotsiras.

“The new Commissioners bring a broad range of skills and understanding of the issues, the challenges and opportunities facing our incredibly diverse society and will be ably led by the newly appointed Chairperson, Mr Chin Tan; who brings valuable legal, community and leadership skills, as well as prior experience with the Commission,” he said.

Mr Kotsiras also recognised the work of the previous Commissioners.

“On behalf of the Victorian Government, I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the substantive work of the previous Commissioners – Ms Elleni Bereded-Samuel, Mr Joseph Caputo, Dr Stanley Chiang, Dr Linda Sydor-Petkovic, Ms Marcia Pinskier, Ms Jenny Taing, Mrs Madhu Bhatia, Mr John Sipek and Mr Hakan Akyol,” Mr Kotsiras said.
