Multicultural Awards for Excellence 2011

A special awards ceremony at Government House on 14 December, hosted by The Hon. Alex Chernov AO QC, Governor of Victorian, was attended by over 500 members of Victoria’s multifaith and multicultural communities.

Multicultural Awards for Excellence were presented by the Premier of Victoria Ted Baillieu, Chief Commissioner of Victoria Police Mr Ken Lay, Minister for Multicultural Affairs and Citizenship Mr Nicholas Kotsiras MLA, Chairperson of the Victorian Multicultural Commission Mr Chin Tan, Minister for Education Mr Martin Dixon MLA, and the Minister for Local Government Ms Jeanette Powell MP.

“These awards have been running since 2002, and are a great opportunity for us to recognise and reward the contributions of individuals and organisations that promote the social, economic and cultural benefits of Victoria's multicultural community,” said Mr Tan.

This year’s awards saw the introduction of two new categories, the Multicultural Business Awards (including the Corporate Innovation Award and the Multicultural Marketing Award), and the Victorian Multicultural Honour Roll.

The recipient of the inaugural Honour Roll award is Mr Ousmane NGom, for his outstanding contribution to local multicultural communities and tireless volunteer work with refugees and new immigrants.

The Premier’s Award for Community Harmony was this year presented to the Victoria Police Soccer Club for their outstanding work with young people from CALD communities.

“I congratulate all recipients and nominees of these Multicultural Awards for Excellence. Through their diligence and selfless hard work, these individuals and organisations have all made a significant contribution to Victoria’s successful and harmonious multicultural community,” said Mr Tan.
